Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba formerly known as Abia State Polytechnic, Aba came alive on Thursday, February 27, 2025 as the School of Business and Management Technology (SBMT) held the Second Academic Business Research Workshop for its final year students.
The well-attended workshop took place at the Polytechnic’s Auditorium under the distinguished chairmanship of Dr. C. S. Mpamugo (Chief Lecturer, Department of Banking and Finance).
After the opening prayer by Rev’d Chinwenmeri Nwaobia, Emmanuel Anglican Church, Osusu-Umule, the Master of Ceremonies, Ikonne Ugwueze O. Esq ensured that the workshop moved smoothly from one stage to another.
In his opening remarks, the chairman on the occasion, Dr. C. S. Mpamugo emphasized the importance of the workshop and urged the students to pay rapt attention in order to benefit immensely from the workshop.
He commended the Dean of SBMT, Dr. Chinweoke Nwaeze for the laudable initiative as well as the Rector, Engr. Dr. Okoro Christopher Kalu for approving the workshop.
Declaring the workshop open, Dr. Fijoh Ome Kalu, the Deputy Rector (Academic) appreciated the Dean of SBMT, Dr. Chinweoke Nwaeze, the entire management and staff of SBMT for finding him worthy to declare the workshop open.
He underscored the significance of project writing in tertiary institutions. However, he expressed dismay that it has been messed up over the years.
He lauded Dr. Chinweoke Nwaeze for organizing the workshop for a second time and prayed that the academic milestone initiated by him in SBMT would be sustained.
He urged the students to take it seriously adding that it is a crucial factor in their academic pursuit.
He reminded the students that the school has zero tolerance for plagiarism and warned them not to copy another person’s work.
He expressed optimism that the workshop would help the students in writing their project.
In his speech, the facilitator and Dean, School of Business and Management Technology (SBMT), Dr. Chinweoke Nwaeze appreciated the presence of the large turnout of students, lecturers and other notable personalities.
He said that the workshop would help the students to learn how to write a very good project adding that the resource persons would do justice to the various topics assigned to them.
He reminded the lecturers that project writing is not a period of intimidating the students, extorting money from them or telling them if they would pass or not.
According to him, project writing is a time to show love to the students they are supervising as well as a time to bring to bear their research skills because at the end of the day they are going to append their signature on the project.
He appreciated the Rector, Engr. Dr. Christopher Kalu Okoro for approving the workshop and eulogized him for his remarkable transformation of the Polytechnic within a short time in office.
He urged the Board, Management, Staff and Students of the Polytechnic to sustain their total support for him as he pilots the affairs of the Polytechnic to greater height.
Dr. Chinweoke Nwaeze lauded the Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti (OFR) for his remarkable leadership and monumental achievements in the state and called on all and sundry to continue to support his people-oriented and achievement-laden administration.
He expressed profound gratitude to the local organizing committee (LOC) headed by Dr. Chukwu Mark Kalu (Senior Lecturer, BAM Department) for their unwavering commitment and colossal sacrifice.
Dr. Chinweoke Nwaeze also extolled some individuals who contributed immensely to the success of the workshop including, his younger brother, Dr. Obinna Nwaeze – a Canadian-based medical doctor, his cousin, Prince Eberechi Abangwo (CEO, Prince Abangwo Foundation), Mr. Ufere Patrick, the Mayor of Obingwa LGA, Hon. Maxwell Nwadike, Mr Ugochukwu Nwaoha (CEO, Poly Plastic Industries Ltd, Aba), Peter Edwin Amos (President, Banking and Finance) among others.
He applauded his lovely wife and wonderful children for their profound love, constant prayers and unalloyed support as well as his colleagues for their encouragement and best wishes.
At the end of his speech, Dr. Kingsley Onyekachi Onyele of the Department of Banking and Finance, Rhema University, Aba lectured the students on “Topic Selection, Introduction and Literature Review.
He said that research is as old as the existence of man adding that people carry out research either to contribute to existing knowledge or to provide solution to a problem.
He pointed out that the process of project report writing in management and social sciences consists of five chapters namely chapter one (introduction), chapter two (Literature Review or Review of Related Literature), Chapter Three (Research Methodology), Chapter Four (Presentation and Discussion of Results), Chapter Five (Summary, Recommendation and Conclusion).
He said that Chapter One comprises background of study, statement of problem, objectives of study, significance of study, scope and limitations of study, definition of terms among others.
He dealt with Chapters One and Two and at the end of his brilliant presentation, he entertained questions from the following students, Akpan Mbuotidem Effiong, a HND 2 student of BAM, Akpaka Michael Osinachi, a HND 2 student of BAM and Orji Chijioke Israel.
Thereafter, a Certificate of Participation was presented to him by the chairman on the occasion.
The second resource person Dr. Okoroafor Onyedikachi Michael, the Director, Dataman Consult Services, Aba, lectured on the topic, “Research Methodology and Data Analysis”, which covered Chapter Three of Project Writing.
He said that research methodology can be viewed from two perspectives namely primary data methodology and secondary data methodology.
According to him, a primary data based research methodology is made up of the following parts: research design, sources of data, population of the study, sample size determination while a secondary data methodology has the following components, research design, nature, sources of data, model specification, method of data analysis among others.
He emphasized that when you are carrying out a primary data based research methodology you are the one that would generate your data whereas in secondary data based research methodology you only collate data because they are already in existence.
He also said that the methodology you use is dependent on the type of study that you want to carry out.
He spoke extensively on other issues related to his topic and at the end of his superb presentation he entertained questions from the students including Chukwuemeka Sandra C, a HND 2 student of Public Administration. He also received a Certificate of Participation.
In his presentation, titled: “Summary, Conclusion, Recommendation and References”, Rev. Dr. Oko Azu Kalu, the Director of Life Circle Counselling and Research Centre, Aba advised the students to shun plagiarism in their project writing.
According to him, the chapter five of every study or research work contains the interpretation of the data analysis, the discussion of the findings, the implications of the study, conclusion drawn from the findings, recommendations of the necessary line of action as a result of the findings, limitations of the study and suggestions for further studies while the reference is usually on a separate page. He entertained questions from both the students and staff.
Thereafter, the Dean of SBMT, Dr. Chinweoke Nweze presented a Certificate of Participation to him.
The workshop also featured numerous side attractions including a musical interlude anchored by the Director of Social, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, Anyanwu Gospel (aka MC Real), a HND 2 Public Administration student, presentation of Evolve Account by the Retail Head Southeast of Keystone Bank, Ugwu Chinedu and Orji Orji Nwokeka, a powerful life-saving product sales promotion and wealth creation by Amb. Chinwe Ohameze of Richlance International Limited among others.
The workshop was a huge success. It climaxed with light refreshment and attracted the presence of students, lecturers and a galaxy of distinguished personalities.
