Every birthday offers an opportunity for reflection, but for Hon. Dame Blessing Nwagba, PhD, each new year is also a celebration of resilience, courage, service and an unwavering commitment to the people of Abia State, the nation and humanity.

As family members, political associates, admirers and well-wishers celebrate the quintessential woman fondly known as “Total Blessing” on July 27, 2027, the occasion goes beyond the cutting of cakes and exchange of goodwill messages.

It is a fitting moment to examine the unrelenting and extraordinary political journey of one of Abia State’s most recognizable female political heavyweights—a journey defined not by comfort, but by persistence in the face of daunting challenges.

In a political environment where women have often struggled for acceptance, Hon. Blessing Nwagba has consistently broken barriers and rewritten the narrative. Her story remains one of determination, sacrifice and uncommon courage.

Her political adventure began in 1998 after she resigned from the civil service, where she served as Supervisory Councillor for Health, Information, Social Welfare, Youth, Sports and Culture in the then Aba Local Government Area.

Armed with conviction rather than privilege, she ventured into partisan politics under the Democratic Party of Nigeria (DPN).

She won election into the Abia State House of Assembly but the sudden death of the then Head of State, General Sani Abacha, prevented the inauguration of that legislature.

Such a setback would have marked the end of the ambitions of so many politicians but for Hon. Blessing Nwagba, it became only the beginning of her political odyssey.

She subsequently served as Deputy Chairman of Aba North Local Government between 1998 and 1999 before becoming one of the founding members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State at the dawn of the Fourth Republic.

Rising steadily through the ranks, she served in several strategic positions, earning a reputation for hard work, loyalty and organizational capacity. However, her political path was never smooth.

In 2003, she contested for the Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency seat and believed she won the election before the outcome was altered. Four years later, she sought the same office but did not secure her party’s ticket.

Again in 2011, her ambition for the House of Representatives gave way to the State House of Assembly after party leaders persuaded her to contest the state legislative seat.

She accepted the challenge, won convincingly and was inaugurated into the Fifth Abia State House of Assembly. It was in the legislature that Hon. Nwagba truly distinguished herself.

Renowned for her fearless contributions on the floor of the House, robust representation and accessibility to her constituents, she became one of the most visible lawmakers during her time. Her dedication earned widespread admiration across party lines.

Following the 2015 election, despite the political turbulence that swept through Aba, she fought a prolonged legal battle and successfully reclaimed her mandate through the courts, returning to the Assembly for a second term. That victory further reinforced her reputation as a determined leader unwilling to surrender the people’s mandate.

Remarkably, throughout her second tenure, she stood as the only woman among the 24 members of the Sixth Abia State House of Assembly—a position she occupied with confidence, dignity and distinction.

Rather than allowing gender to become a limitation, she transformed it into a source of inspiration for countless young women aspiring to leadership.

Her political ambitions continued to expand. After unsuccessful attempts to secure the PDP ticket for the House of Representatives in 2019, she moved to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), where she emerged as the first female governorship candidate in Abia State’s political history, setting another important milestone for women’s participation in governance.

Her subsequent movement to the All Progressives Congress (APC) saw her emerge as the party’s senatorial candidate for Abia South in the 2023 general election.

Although she did not win, her campaigns significantly strengthened the visibility and grassroots appeal of the APC across the zone.

Beyond elections, Hon. Nwagba has remained an active participant in national politics.

She served on the APC Presidential Campaign Council and the party’s National Convention Planning Committee, playing notable roles during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s presidential campaign alongside other prominent female political leaders. Yet, her greatest impact appears to lie outside the elective office.

A passionate advocate for women’s political inclusion, she has devoted enormous energy to mobilizing support for greater female representation in governance.

As Chairperson of the Nigerian League of Women Voters (NILOWV), Abia State Chapter, she continues to champion civic participation and leadership opportunities for women. Her advocacy also extends into public health and social development.

As the South-East Coordinator of the International Society of Substance Use Prevention Practitioners (ISSUP) Nigeria, she has led campaigns against substance abuse while promoting prevention, treatment and community awareness across the region. These initiatives reflect a politician whose relevance extends beyond campaign seasons. They portray a leader committed to building healthier communities and strengthening democratic participation.

Her life offers enduring lessons for women across Nigeria. In a society where political leadership has traditionally been dominated by men, Hon. Blessing Nwagba has demonstrated that competence, resilience and integrity remain stronger qualifications than gender.

Through victories and disappointments, courtroom battles and political transitions, she has continued to stand tall, inspiring countless women to believe that leadership is attainable through courage, preparation and perseverance. Indeed, “Total Blessing” has become more than a political nickname.
